Sand Spear Installation

Save approximately 90% of your water bill!!! *

A sand spear is basically a shallow water bore, less than 6 metres deep. A sand spear is a stainless steel filter that is inserted into the sand and connected to a pump. Water is sucked out of the sand, through the filter and up to the pump located at ground level. The water is ideal for use in the garden. If you live on the Coastal Strip, chances are you have water just under your feet. The depth of a sand spear on the Sunshine Coast can range from about 12 feet to 20 feet deep. A sand spear will most likely give you greater pressure than town water and enable you to run up to 2 sprinklers at once. (Site dependent on available ground water). No longer do you have to worry about water restrictions.

* Minimal cost of electricity to run a pump, rather than pay excessive fees for water.

The benefits of installing a sand spear:
> SAVE MONEY! Approximately 90%
> NO WATER RESTRICTIONS – Water whenever you want
> Higher water pressure. Possibly run two sprinklers at once
> Better looking gardens at a lower cost

A fully automatic pressure system costs $1700 incl GST. This is a DAB 60 litres per minute pressure pump, with an electronic controller. The electronic controller starts and stops the pump as the tap (or solenoid) is turned on or off. It also protects the pump from burnout in case of a fault condition. It has up to a 6 year (optional) warranty. These Italian made DAB pumps are considered by many as to the best on the market. Be wary of other installers using a manual system or inferior pumps.

A 100mm hole is dug to a maximum depth of 20 feet. This hole is likely to go through coffee rock and possibly a layer of clay. 90mm stormwater pipe is used to case the hole. A slurpy, coupled with a fire fighter pump and a water reservoir is used to flush the casing. A 900 mm long marine grade stainless steel spear is inserted, equipped with a non return valve which eliminates the need for priming (other than initial priming) of the pump. The pump is bolted to a concrete slab. Filter sand is installed around the spear, minimising any likely hood of the spear becoming blocked. The casing is then raised 1100mm to allow the spear to suck from its entire length. The pump is connected via a union. A garden tap supplied enables the customer to access the underground water. Some customers opt to have the pump connected to there existing watering system at an extra cost.

A pump cover is recommended and is a requirement for pump warranty purposes. However due to vast array of colours, sizes and styles, responsibility of pump covers are best left to the customer. Pump covers are readily available locally and range from approximately $90 - $120. Some customers build their own cover.

.6kw, 60 litres per minute. Dry run protection built in. Constant pressure on demand. Technopolymer Casing – will not corrode.

Other options are available for those that wish to install their own sand spear or use their own pump. We offer options such as drilling the hole only, or drilling, casing and flushing the hole. Saves busting you’re back trying to get through that coffee rock!

We have trialled other pumps and in the interests of (long term) customer satisfaction, we recommend, use and install only DAB pumps.

Sand Spear Requirements

  1. You MUST be ON the sand and close to the beach! We can not provide you with a sand spear if you can not meet this one requirement.
  2. There must be a minimum of 860mm wide access to allow drilling machine to access site. It is possible to locate a sand spear in the front yard with a pipe running to the pump located in the backyard – in the case of narrow gateways that restrict the access of machinery.
